Linux Distribution List

Welcome to the Linux Distribution List. This list attempts to be as complete and accurate as possible. However, mistakes are made sometimes. If you find a broken link or some other mistake, e-mail me at mrg@hobbiton.org. If I don't have a distribution here that you know of, send info about it to mrg@hobbiton.org. I would prefer a URL to the distro's home page; if there isn't one, then a URL to the download site and a breif description (what I put in the list) will be fine. Don't send me any distros via e-mail.

There is a TODO list. Read it *first* before sending me links to any new distributions.

Full Size Distributions

Full Size Distributions are those that don't install to floppy disks, and have provisions for or require hard drive partitioning. Red Hat Linux is a good example.

Mini-Distributions

Mini-Distributions are distributions that install onto floppies.

In this section, one floppy is a single, 3.5" 1.44 megabyte floppy disk unless otherwise noted.

Special Purpose Distributions

Special Purpose Distributions are distributions that are created for special purposes or needs. This includes foreign-language distributions and distributions that install on top of FAT-16/FAT-32 partitions (such as ZipSlack, but not things like Slackware).

Fair Warning: Foreign language distribution entries will probably have limited information. If you have any missing information, and you can e-mail me in English (:-), feel free to send it to me.

There is a "Filesystem type" part for distributions that install on top of a MS-DOS/Windows partition. This will be 1 of 2 types: loop or UMSDOS. UMSDOS maps Linux files onto MS-DOS partitions; with a UMSDOS distribution you can get the Linux files from MS-DOS/Windows. Loop filesystems are essentially big files that act as hard drives. UMSDOS distros are more suseptible to MS-DOS/Windows virii than loop filesystem distros, and are more subject to being mangled by DOS/Windows in general. Loop filesystems don't grow easily (I think - please correct me if I'm wrong). There is also no "Platforms supported" part for these distros: they all run on Intel x86 machines. (MS-DOS-based OSes, including Windows 95 and Windows 98, only run on x86 machines anyway.)

Unclassified Distributions

Unclassified Distributions are distributions that don't fit in anywhere else. "Embedded" Linux distros go here.

End of list. Comments, suggestions, and additions can be mailed to mrg@hobbiton.org.
